Roberts is beloved by Spurs fans for his heroics in the early 80s and leading Tottenham to winning silverware. Roberts established himself into the history books with his fearless performance in the 1981 FA Cup Final where he lost his front teeth in a clash, but refused to come of the pitch, putting his body on the line in his quest to win the FA Cup with Tottenham. Roberts played in every game in that years tournament. The following year Roberts added another FA Cup winners Medal to his collection with Tottenham Graham Souness considers him to be the hardest player he ever played against 1984 was a career high for Roberts as he played in all 12 of Spurs' UEFA Cup campaign matches and scoring 3 goals on route to the final. In the second leg of the final Roberts was handed the captains armband and lead the team by ferocious example scoring an equalizing goal against Anderlecht and stepping up to score the first penalty. Roberts as Spurs Captain won the 1984 UEFA Cup Despite all these honours - Roberts is still fondly remembered for his crunching tackle on Arsenal Hero Charlie Nicholas on New Years Day 1986 - that flattened 'Champagne Charlie' much to the delight of one half of North London 2. Gary Mabbutt From 1982 to 1998 Gary Mabbutt was a rock in the heart of the Tottenham defence. To this day Gary Mabbutt has the second most appearances of all time for Spurs with 611 appearances for the North London Club Gary Mabbutt's Career was never easy - he started in midfield before srettling into a solid defensive partnership with Richard Gough. He battled through an ongoing issue with diabetes throughout his career, suffered a serious facial injury in 1993 forcing him to wear a corrective mask, broke his leg in 1997 and even scored an own goal in the 1987 FA Cup final, giving Coventry City the win and unwittingly giving his name to the Sky Blues fanzine which us forever known as 'Gary Mabbutt's Knee' Despite all this Mabbutt has turned it all into a positive - he has earned 16 England caps, is an ambassador for Spurs, a patron of Diabetes UK and an Ambassador for the Princes trust. He was awarded the MBE in 1994 3. - GARY MILLS BACKS FELLOW FOREST YOUNG GUNS
As some Forest fans voice their view that youth is the best way forward, Reds legend Gary Mills has told Superstar Speakers how Brian Clough was a great example of how to nurture young players. Mills became Forest’s youngest ever first teamer when he made a shock debut in a First Division clash with Arsenal at the City Ground in November 1978 aged 16 years and 11 months. Since replaced at the top of the Reds’ all-time youngest list by Craig Westcarr, the now 59-year-old was also the youngest player to take part in a European Cup final when he started the club’s historic 1-0 triumph over Kevin Keegan’s Hamburg in Madrid barely 18 months later. Today Mills is the manager of Southern League Corby Town but still takes a keen interest in the fortunes of both Nottingham clubs, having also played for and managed Notts County. And he highlights 18-year-old Alex Mighton, who has continued his breakthrough break into Forest’s first team this term and 19-year-old Brennan Johnson, currently on loan at Lincoln City, as positive signs for Forest. Mighton is the fourth youngest Forest debutant and Johnson, 20th on the all-time list, featured last term under Sabri Lamouchi. “Brian Clough’s attitude was that if you’re good enough you’re old enough – and it worked wonders for us,” Mills said. “I made my City Ground debut in the same game when he brought in Garry Birtles after selling Peter Withe. “The gaffer believed in backing the young players and that helped give me my big chance. “But it’s important to say how much work went into making decisions like that possible. Brian Clough had me training with the first team from the age of 14, so when I got my first team chance I wasn’t overwhelmed.” Mills eventually left the City Ground in 1987 when Clough’s younger Reds side, which went on to win two League Cups, finish third in the First Division and be controversially beaten in the 1991 FA Cup final by Spurs was developing. Mills told Superstar Speakers : “Forest have brought young players such as Matty Cash, Joe Worrall and Ben Brereton through in recent seasons and it’s good to see Mighton and Johnson making an impact. I saw Brennan score a couple of goals in Lincoln’s 4-0 win at Northampton and was impressed." “Sometimes being young can be an advantage. I must admit that, being a teenager, I never quite took in the magnitude of what was happening when I played against Hamburg. “I think my family was more nervous than I was. Young players usually play without fear. “I’m sad to see my old club struggling at the wrong end of the Championship but they have a good manager in Chris Hughton, and he will be very aware of the young talent at the City Ground." “Whenever I see a player such as Mighten in a Forest shirt, it brings all my feelings flooding back of being the new lad in the side. “It would give me great pleasure if he and other young players can help improve Forest’s position this season – and point the way to a much brighter future.” Gary Mills is currently writing his autobiography featuring his amazing experience with Brian Clough. - Stuart Pearce. The Legend of Psycho
One of the true legends of Nottingham Forest and England Stuart Pearce is one of the most popular guests we have ever had at Superstar Speakers. Whether its exclusive signing sessions or his hilarious 'Evening with' events, Psycho always delivers. In this blog we have brought together a few of our favourite moments about the iconic life of Stuart Pearce The Famous 'Fixing the Iron' Story Every guest we have at our live events has one story that EVERYONE asks. This is Stuart Pearce's and with all great stories from Nottingham Forest legends, it involves Brian Clough. The story goes that on returning to the City Ground after one of his England call ups, Brian Clough decided to bring Pearce back down to earth, in his unique style. He walked into the dressing room with his usual ball and towel – but this time with an extra, mystery bag. ‘How do you think you played for England on Tuesday night son?’ He asked ‘I thought I did alright’ Replied Pearce ‘I didn’t’ he said ‘I thought you were shit son’ then went on to enquire why there was an advert for Stuart Pearce Electricians in the Forest Programme (As Pearce had been an electrician before turning professional and his brother still worked in the trade) Clough then proceeds to say ‘If my Barbara calls this number you won’t be coming, will you?’ ‘No’ replied Pearce ‘It will be my brother’ ‘Lads Our captain is a fraud’ Cloughie responded and then walks over to the mystery bag and pulls out an iron ‘Our Barbara’s iron is (broken) and if you don’t fix it, you’re not in the team Saturday’ To find out how the story ends visit our YouTube Channel to hear Forest legend and Pearce’s mate Mark Crossley tell us all about it (click the image for the video clip) 2. Penalty Shoot-out Redemption The moment that made Pearce a legend. No England fan of a certain age will ever forget this moment in history. A moment that personifies the personality, bravery and strength of character of Stuart Pearce. Arguably it is the second most iconic moment in the history of English football history after the World Cup win of 1966. The story begins inn the 1990 World Cup Semi Final against West Germany, it went down to a penalty shootout and Pearce being the fearless and patriotic man that he is, stepped up for the fourth penalty and it was saved by the West German Goalkeeper. This combined with Chris Waddle’s miss sent England out of the World Cup, a tournament that many thought they could win and the first semi final that the country had been in since 1966. 6 years later in Euro 1996 it was another penalty shootout, this time against Spain in the Quarter Finals and Pearce once again steps up. The nation held its breath, here was Stuart Pearce putting himself in the firing line in front of the whole country. A man who before the tournament wasn't even guaranteed to be picked for the squad and with the memories and emotions of Italia 90 still fresh in everyones mind, But Stuart Pearce being the man that he is, stepped up Even England Manager Terry Venables was surprised that Pearce wanted to take the penalty “We got to the end of extra-time, we all come together in the centre circle and I went over to Terry and I thought, ‘If I leave this to chance he’s not going to pick me to take a penalty because of my history.’ I just said to him, ‘I’ll take the third penalty.’ “He looked at me and went, ‘Are you fucking sure?!’ “I went, Yeah, I think I am. I was before you said that! Pearce placed the ball, and struck it with every fibre of his being. The nation watched as the ball powered its way into the back of the net and all of a sudden, 6 years of pain, anguish and disappointment left him as he screamed ‘come on’ at the top of his lungs and furiously punched the air, celebrating a moment with the rest of the nation – leading to one of Sports most iconic moments and iconic photographs Pearce’s philosophy was simple: “It would have been physically impossible for me not to take one of the kicks. Failure for me was not missing, it was standing on the half-way line watching someone else take the kick.” With that one moment, one act of bravery - English Football History was made 3. He was manager of the 2012 Olympic GB team and DIDN'T pick David Beckham After retiring from playing Pearce moved into the world of management, which seemed like a natural fit for the no-nonsense hard man. Pearce was the England Under 21 manager and had been since 2007 so he was perfect for the Team GB position. Expectation was high for a Great British Eleven, with London hosting the event this was the first time Team GB had a football team in the Olympics since 1960 after a the FA stopped recognition of the difference between professional and amateur footballers, and since the GB team was based around the England Amateur team, the FA stopped entering a football team into the Olympics The big talking point with Pearce’s team was the fact that David Beckham wasn’t included dispite Beckham’s work in bringing the Olympics to London and using his personal brand and status to generate interest, expectation said that Beckham would not only be in the team, but the captain. Pearce didn’t pick him. The team was allowed 3 ‘overage players’ and Pearce’s team choice was based on “Form and form alone” In normal circumstances the managers decision is final, but David Beckham brings another level of media awareness and exposure to any event so much so that Pearce was aware that converstaions were going on behind his back to try and include Beckham in the team. Speaking to Talksport he said “I think discussions were had, baring in mind adidas sponserd the games, the kit and they were also David’s sponser…I think conversations were also had between David’d agent and the FA about him having the captaincy – all these things were going on behind my back” It even got mentioned in Parliament! Despite all the talk, Beckham didn’t play in the team with Pearce's three 'overage' players being Ryan Giggs (as Captain), Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards. Britain only made it to the Quarter Finals 4. He once played Goalkeeper David James as a striker for Manchester City Having played under the master of psychology Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest, you would imagine that Stuart Pearce picked up a thing or two on the subject. However on the final day of the 2004/2005 season Pearce made a decision that even Cloughie didn’t dare try It was either an inspired or insane move but Pearce made the ‘tactical’ substitution with 15 minutes to go. He put David James up front, partnered with Robbie Fowler, in the hope of getting the goal they needed to secure European football. James even had an outfield shirt with number one printed on the back! Unfortunately the game ended in a draw, but in the defense of James at the start of the game even he didn’t know it was going to happen! GiveMeSport said “What followed was pure hilarity. The 6ft 4in goalkeeper couldn’t have looked more out of place. He was like a bull in a china shop. In one calamitous moment, he took out two opponents with a horrendously mistimed challenge after he had completely mishit a volley.” In retrospect Pearce said "I sat at home on Saturday night and thought to myself: 'What shall I do if we're drawing the game late on and need to hit it long?'" Pearce explained. "I've got a good striker in Jon Macken, who is really disappointed, but I wanted to unsettle them and in some ways it did. “It unsettled everyone . . . them and us." However you look at it, its one of the truly great and memorable moments in Premier League history 5. He is on the cover of an album and has appeared on punk rock shows on radio Its well known that Psycho is a huge fan of Punk Rock music. But its less common knowledge that he is actually featured on the cover of ‘The Lurkers’ Live album Gods Lonely Men, right in the middle of the mosh pit with the rest of the crowd. He has seen The Stranglers over 300 times, and in an attempt to live his rock star dreams he was allowed by the band to smash up their dressing room which he did with pure joy and scared the life out of Sean Dyche Pearce is such a life long fan of the genre he has even featured on BBC 6 music with Steve Lamacq, talking about his favourite songs and moments in Punk Culture 6. He is the Third oldest outfield player to play for England Not just that, but he is the 9th oldest player overall, with only Stanley Matthews and Les Compton (as outfield players) ahead of him. At the age of 37 years and 137 days Stuart Pearce represented his country in the Euro 2000 qualifiers. 8th September 1999 in a goalless draw against Poland Stuart Pearce made his last appearance for his country. - Nottingham Forest European Cup Winners 40th Anniversary Reunion
***Scroll to the bottom of the blog to see all the Legends*** Tickets Available Here It is one of the greatest achievements in the history of English Football. Nottingham Forest, under the guidance of the legendary Brian Clough, went from the second division promotion to first division champions in one year then carried that momentum on to win back to back European Cup winners, picking up two EFL cups along the way. Nottingham Forest started as underdogs, but with world class management from Clough and Peter Taylor, incredible team spirit and understanding of Cloughie's iconic 'rules of football' and the willingness to break the British Transfer Record and sign the right players for the right position - Nottingham Forest in this 5 year period transformed themselves as nobodies to kings of European Football and established themselves as one of Britain's 'Big Clubs' forever more This epic achievement is understandably the high point in the history of the football club, an achievement that will never be replicated, and hasn't been by a British club in the last 41 years. In fact since the back-to-back European Cup wins and 1981 European Cup campaign Nottingham Forest have failed to qualify for the competition leaving them an unbeatable record of having only ever played 20 games in the competition and have won 2 trophies! With a games to trophies ratio of 10 games per trophy - Nottingham Forest can claim that they have made footballing history Superstar Speakers are delighted to be hosting the Nottingham Forest European Cup 40th reunion where we will be bringing together AT LEAST 16 of the men who helped put Nottingham on the map and brought the biggest prize in European Football to The City Ground ***The Nottingham Forest Legends in alphabetical order*** Viv Anderson Nottingham Forest 1974 - 1984 Born in Clifton, Nottinghamshire Viv Anderson actually spent a year with Manchester United schoolboys before coming back to the East Midlands and Nottingham Forest. Trevor Francis was placed firmly in the history books when Brian Clough broke the British Transfer record to sign the Birmingham City wonder kid for a staggering £1 million - the first time a footballer had been sold for this amount. It is worth bearing in mind that the previous record was £516,000 taking David Mills from Middlesbrough to West Brom. Despite his importance to the Nottingham Forest team, Brian Clough dropped Archie Gemmill for the 1979 final and although he earned a medal he didn't get a minute of playing time in the match. John McGovern put it best when he said "John Robertson was like Ryan Giggs but with two good feet, not one. He had more ability than Ryan Giggs, his ratio of creating goals was better and overall he was the superior footballer", whilst Forest coach Jimmy Gordon rated Robertson as a better player than Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews, saying that he "had something extra on top".
