He quickly established himself as a first team regular with his unique combination of skill, strength, passion and ability. John Barnes was a key factor in the rise of Watford FC from the old 2nd division to the top flight of English football and then finish runners up in the 1st division in 1983 and FA Cup finalists the year later in 1984. To this day John Barnes is still beloved and respected by the Watford fans and is a regular fixture on the ‘all-time XI’ for Watford. He made 296 appearances and scored 85 goals for the Hornets before signing for Liverpool John Barnes is most associated with Liverpool FC. Signed by Sir Kenny Dalglish in 1987 Barnes was part of a new generation of talent that was tasked with maintaining the success of the Merseyside club. Barnes established himself as one of the greatest players in England during his spell at Liverpool – an England Regular and first team player at one of the countries biggest clubs, Liverpool won the league in Barnes’s first season at Anfield, helped in part by his 15 goals from midfield. John Barnes earned his place in the hearts of the Liverpool fans after the Hillsborough disaster where he made the effort to visit injured fans in hospital and attend funerals of some of the victims – he even pulled out of an International friendly to make these commitments In his 10 years with Liverpool John Barnes made 403 appearances and scored 106 goals – He won the league twice, the FA Cup twice, League Cup once and the Charity Shield 3 times. Barnes’s time at Liverpool is best summed up by his team mate Peter Beardsley who said "The best player I ever played with, bar none. For three or four years at the end of the '80s, John was possibly the best player in the world." Check Out Former Liverpool Legend Dean Saunders on John Barnes John Barnes was handed his first England cap under Bobby Robson in 1983. He represented England until 1995 earning a total of 79 caps. Barnes’s finest moment for England (outside of the John Barnes rap world in motion) was his wonder goal against Brazil in 1984. Barnes proved his caliber as a player when he ran through the entire Brazil defence and scored what is considered one of England’s greatest goals Barnes’s England career didn’t quite match his club career – with the failure of Euro 88 and an injury in Italia 90 and another in Euro 92. John Barnes felt he didn’t get the same freedom with his country that he did at club level – stating that England’s systems were too rigid. Yet he continued to play and perform where he could for England – even returning to the side in the build up to Euro 96 John Barnes is a national hero – a man who has transformed from talented footballer to national hero (with his rap) and then into a media celebrity. He is a regular on TV notably appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, Who do you think you are and Celebrity Big Brother. Never one to mince his words John is an intelligent broadcaster and author who mixes his football knowledge and expertise as a pundit to offering his political opinion on question time Not bad for a man who started with Lucozade adverts and rapping with New Order. • There's Only One Ricky Hatton

Ahead of Ricky Hattons show in 2022 We celebrate the career of the Hitman and what made the British Public take him to their hearts Britain's Favourite Boxer “The fans only don't support me cos of the way I fight, they support me cos of the way I am.” Ricky Hatton is one of Britain’s best loved boxers, famous for bringing a lively and loud following where ever he boxed around the world. Its always a party when the Hitman is in town Superstar Speakers will be bringing Ricky The Hitman Hatton to Northampton Saints on 28th January 2022 for his one man ‘Evening with’ show. Ricky is still a beloved British Sportsman and his shows are unlike any others – he mixes tales of his incredible career with hilarious stand-up comedy and his natural Mancunian charm and wit. Ahead of Ricky Hatton Live in Northampton and Belfast – We celebrate the career of the Hitman and what made the British Public take him to their hearts What is Ricky Hatton’s Record? “I think my greatest achievement in boxing is my following.” The Hitman ended his 15-year career with a fight record of 48 Fights, 45 Wins, 32 Knock-outs and only 3 losses. Before turning professional Ricky was an accomplished amateur boxer having won SEVEN British titles at light-welterweight and represented the UK at the 1996 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships – where he was eliminated in the semi-finals despite 4 of 5 judges awarding the fight to him This led the 18-year-old Hatton to turn away from the amateurs and turn professional Ricky Hatton won his first fight by TKO in the first round against Colin McAuley and the boxing world took notice – his second fight was at the prestigious Madison Square Garden on the undercard for Naseem Hamed vs Kevin Kelley, in which Ricky won again He spent the next few years building a reputation and was named 1999 Young Fighter of the Year by the British Boxing Writers Club and capped off the decade by defeating Dillon Carew for the WBO Intercontinental Light-Welterweight title. This would be the first of many titles Ricky won in his career – including the WBU light-welterweight title, IBF light-welterweight title, The Ring light-welterweight title, WBA welterweight title, IBO light-welterweight title and WBC international light-welterweight title It was really the 39th fight in his career against Kosta Tszyu that the world took notice – Hatton went in as a huge underdog, with Tszyu considered one of the greatest pound for pound active fighters with one of the hardest punches. The fight took place in Manchester’s MEN arena, giving Ricky the home field advantage and support from the Manchester fans. Hatton took Tszyu to the final round before Knocking his opponent out. It is considered one of the greatest fights from a British Boxer in 20 years. Ricky Hatton had arrived Hatton was undefeated in his first 43 fights with 31 knockouts – it was these credentials and reputation that earned him his fight against Floyd Mayweather Floyd Mayweather Vs Ricky Hatton “If there was such a thing as re-incarnation, Floyd would come back as himself” Ricky’s 44th career fight would be his biggest and most famous. When he answered the challenge of the number 1 Boxer in the world Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Both men were undefeated and champions – Ricky was holding The Ring Light-Welterweight championship and Mayweather the WBC and The Ring Welterweight Championships – which were on the line in this fight The fight was staged in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on 8th December 2007 and drew 920,000 on HBO and 1,150,000 on Sky Box Office Ricky’s fans flooded to Las Vegas and created a wall of noise and vocal support for the home town hero singing God Save the Queen (along with Tom Jones), Blue Moon as Ricky walked to the ring and a near constant chant of ‘there’s only one Ricky Hatton’ and 'Hatton Wonderland.' This level of support helped motivate Hatton to bring the fight to Mayweather, even catching Mayweather with a left jab that rocked the American and gave Ricky an advantage that he continued to press until Mayweather landed a right that cut Ricky above the eye. In round six Hatton was docked a point for allegedly hitting Maywether in the back of the head, this was later revealed to have hit the ring rope rather than Mayweather, but the decision caused Ricky to lose concentration and ended with Mayweather adapting to Ricky’s fighting style and capitalising on his loss of focus, ending up knocking Hatton down in the 10th round and despite Hatton getting back to his feet and continuing the fight, His corner threw the towel in and Hatton suffered his first career loss The official scores ended 88 - 82, 89 - 81, 89 – 81 all to Mayweather Who did Ricky Hatton Lose to? Ricky only lost two more fights in his professional career to Manny Pacquiao in 2009 and to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 Man of the People – the Ricky Hatton Sense of humour “I'm a Mancunian born and bred and I feel I'm no different to the man in the crowd and it's nice to reward them. I want to become a great champion.” Ricky Hatton is a proud working-class hero. Famed for his self-deprecating wit and sense of humour. This, combined with his fighting style endeared him to the British Public Hatton famously struggled with his weight between fights, Ricky would regularly gain 35-40lb between matches and would have to cut and train heavily before each next fight. This earned him the nickname ‘Ricky Fatton’ Its true Hatton style he took this nickname on the chin and embraced it by wearing a custom Ricky Fatton fat suit in press picture, when asked about his weight he simply replied They call me Ricky Fatton. Mind you I’ve had a lot on my plate recently. I got measured for this suit the other week. They measured my pants, jacket, top to bottom. Bloody hell Ricky you’re a Mark F they said, a size up from a marquee And “I've got a problem with my legs; they just can't walk past a chippy.” This level of humour and fun is evident in Ricky’s life and stand-up show as he always entertains with a series of jokes and anecdotes that leave the crowds in stitches every time! He even appeared on WWE RAW once and ended up fighting with Chavo Guerrero Ricky tells a funny story of how Floyd Mayweather tried to throw his weight around in the build up to their fight in 2007 “And I remember me, Kerry Kayes, Billy Graham, my dad, and Paul Speak were all sat in this restaurant and Floyd came in with a load of cameras as we were sat down having a meal…And he was going ‘Hey Ricky, how are you doing?’ and he was flicking $100 bills all over this table and all the press were lapping it up and taking pictures…I went ‘Oh that’s very kind of you Floyd’ and I picked up all these hundred dollar bills and said ‘How much was the bill mate..They said $300 and I went ‘cheers d******’ and put about $800 in my top pocket! And all the press took pictures laughing their heads off and Floyd did not like it..So for all his mouth he will never get one over on me the d******.” Because Ricky was so beloved by the public, when he opened up about his private battle with depression, there was nothing but support for the champion. Ricky opening up about the disease helped pave the way for men to admit they suffered too and that it wasn’t a sign of weakness Training the Future and the legacy of Ricky Hatton Since retirement Ricky Hatton is still involved in Boxing, this time as a trainer. Notabably training Zhanat Zhakiyanov, Paul Upton and Tommy Fury. Hatton’s Son Campbell has followed in his fathers footsteps and recently turned pro “I’m extremely proud of Campbell turning professional,” said British fight legend Hatton. “I’ve been proud of him since the day he was born. He’s a fine young man and he’s following in my footsteps. My mum and dad brought me up in a certain way and I’d like to think I’m doing the same thing with Campbell. “He now has a massive platform with Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports. I don’t think he’s going to disappoint. He’s only young and he’s got a way to go. I think people will love his personality, he’s a chip off the old block. Fans will love his fighting style. “I think people will take him to their hearts like they did with me. He’s got a great team behind him with Matchroom and Eddie, he’s got me and Matthew looking after him in the gym. He’s got a heart as big as his dad’s. He has the talent and the ability to be a real force and success story in the game.” ***For all our Boxing News, Events and Memorabilia - Click this image*** Don't forget to keep up with our latest news and offers by subscribing to our mailing list at the bottom of the page Get social by following us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

  • The Magnificence of Brian Clough

“telling the entire world and his dog how good a manager I was. I knew I was the best but I should have said nowt and kept the pressure off 'cos they'd have worked it out for themselves.” Brian Clough. There was only one Brian Clough. A truly magnificent man who carved a legacy and a niche in English football and made history as he marched forwards with Nottingham Forest. Cloughie spent nearly 20 years at the City Ground – managing the club from 1975 through to 1993. Seeing the club go from unfashionable ‘no-hopers’ in the second division to back-to-back winners of the greatest prize in European Club football. Not bad for a man who was told ‘You’ll never win anything here’ by former manager Dave MacKay. Brian Clough was a man who knew where he was going and defied expectation – and he took Nottingham Forest from 13th in the second division to promotion to winning the first division to winning the European Cup in 1979 and then again in 1980. He is responsible for the first ever £1 million pound transfer in British football history (doubling the existing record) Nottingham Forest never made it to Europe again and have the unusual stat of having 2 European Cups for every 10 games they played in the competition. A record that will never be beaten as teams now have to play more than 10 games in each competition He even continued to manage Forest into the Premier League. Clough saw it all, lived it all and still is iconic in the city of Nottingham – not every football manager gets a statue, but Cloughie’s likeness stands tall in the heart of Nottingham, and for good reason. He was a complete one off and was always meant to be immortalized 1. Brian Clough Quotes Never one to shy away from speaking his mind (both on and off camera) the wit and wisdom of Brian Clough lives on with his enigmatic quotes. Every single thing he said is laced with charm, wit and arrogance. Cloughie knew he was special and he wasn’t afraid to tell people This is our collection of our favourite Brian Clough Quotes “Good managers make good sides. There’s no such thing as a side making a manager” – on lucky players. “We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right” – on listening to players' opinions. "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one" “The River Trent is lovely; I know because I have walked on it for 18 years” “Beckham? His wife can’t sing and his barber can’t cut hair.” –on a new breed of player "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" – on being compared to Sir Alex Ferguson "My wife said to me in bed, 'God, your feet are cold.' I said, 'You can call me Brian in bed, dear.'" – Being Charming There are countless examples of Brian Clough Quotes – every time he went on TV or to the press, magic happened, Brian Clough said what he meant, meant what he said and did it with a smile on his face Its incredible to think just how he would have managed in the world of social media – because Brian Clough on Twitter would be a thing to behold! 2. Goals as a player There is more to Brian Clough than the manager of Nottingham Forest. As a young man he played professional football and in typical Cloughie style, he made history doing it. Brian Clough was born in Middlesbrough in 1935 and when he was 20 years old (after national service) he played for his home town club as a striker. Brian Clough played 222 games for Boro and scored 204 goals, a goal in every 1.08 games. To this day he is still the 41st highest goal scorer in football league history. This included scoring over 40 goals a season for 4 seasons running. Brian Clough being the man he was, was getting frustrated with scoring countless goals but his team to winning due to defensive problems and started to fall out with the rest of the squad, accusing them of betting against the team. He even once asked the team how many he needed to score for the team to win after a 6-6 draw at Charlton. In 1961 Clough was sold to Sunderland and scored 63 goals in 74 matches, 1 goal in 1.17 games including 24 goals by December. Brian Clough is best remembered as a manager, especially after his success with Nottingham Forest, but credit does need to be given to his incredible career and goalscoring record in the North East. His overall goal ratio is 1 goal in 0.916 3. The Miracle Men Brian Clough is, and always will be, synonymous with Nottingham Forest. It is Brian Clough that made Nottingham Forest into what they are and what they became. It’s no exaggeration to say that Brian Clough turned Forest into one of the ‘big teams’ in the country, and for a brief time Europe. The transformation at Nottingham Forest was nothing short of a miracle – hence the reason that even now over 40 years later the team are known as the miracle men. Cloughie took an unfashionable team, with out of favour players and made them the best in Europe. He started building the squad as soon as he arrived in 1975, raiding his old teams Leeds and Derby for the players he wanted, believed in and could play ‘his’ way. Signing up future legends such as John McGovern and John O’Hare, refreshed the careers of John Robertson, Martin O’Neill and Viv Anderson. Brought in the experience of Frank Clark on a free transfer from Newcastle, transformed Tony Woodcock from a forgotten midfielder to an England capped striker and signed Kenny Burns from Birmingham and changed him from a tough striker to a tough centre back turning Kenny into a semi-regular Forest Captain and FWA player of the year in 1978. This was the magic of Brian Clough – he knew what he wanted to see on the football pitch, knew which players he needed to achieve it and then managed the men to perform to his expectations. Brian Clough was a footballing genius. It was this mentality and drive that pushed Forest to the heights of Europe. It’s the greatest story in English football history and it will never be repeated. Clough took Forest from 13th in the second division with zero expectation. He started building in 1975 and by 1977 he had won promotion to the first division; He then won the double of the League and League cup in 1978 ensuring he qualified for European competition. Outside of the famous 1979 and 1980 European Cup victories – Forest under Clough won the League cup a further 3 times, full members cup twice, the Charity shield, European Super Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup. Brian Clough will also be remembered for being the manager that broke the British Transfer record and made Trevor Francis the first ever Million Pound Footballer. Despite this incredible statement of intent Clough kept Francis away from European Competition until the final! With the million-pound man chomping at the bit to prove his value and position in the team he scored the winning goal that won Forest the 1979 European Cup – it was Francis’s first ever European game and he won the medal and scored the winning goal. It was another genius move from Old big Head 4. Gary Mills Managing Nottingham Forest was more that just the big marquee signings and the glory. Brian Clough controlled every aspect of the football club. He was Nottingham Forest and Nottingham Forest was him. (There are very strong rumours that this level of control is what prevented him being named England Manager) Brian Clough made sure he knew everything that was happening at the club and in particular the young players coming through – to maintain the success of the football club. One such young talent was Gary Mills. Gary Mills was 17 years and 201 days old when he won his first European Cup medal – the youngest to ever achieve this accolade and a record that still stands to this day! Again, Brian Clough knew that this young man would have the will and desire to succeed in a team of established players and claimed that ‘if you are good enough, you are old enough’ Millsy build a career on this reputation and took Cloughies style and winning mentality to further his career, by becoming a Leicester City Legend who captained them to promotion and an established manager in the lower leagues Check out our blog on Gary Mills here *** Click the image *** 5. The legends of Brian Clough Not many men leave a legacy like Brian Clough. His reputation and successes are incredible, but the behind-the-scenes stories are where the real magic lies. There are many, many stories about Brian Clough that get told and whilst many are unbelievable and outlandish – in the case of Brian Clough, you never know where the truth lies! We spoke to 3 former players who crossed paths with the iconic manager – and the tales they told were all equally magnificent! Mark Crossley on how Brian Clough Dealt with David Currie Dean Saunders on Brian Clough trying to sign him Glyn Hodges on Brian Clough meeting the Crazy Gang Despite all the pomp and circumstance, Brian Clough did have a humble side – he was a man of the people and appreciated his good fortune – his words on how he would like to be remembered are a world away from the bombastic persona However, what does remain, is the fact that Brian Clough will always be remembered “I want no epitaphs of profound history and all that type of thing. I contributed - I would hope they would say that, and I would hope somebody liked me,” On how he would like to be remembered.” Don't forget to keep up with our latest news and offers by subscribing to our mailing list at the top of the page Get social by following us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook
