  • GARY MILLS BACKS FELLOW FOREST YOUNG GUNS

As some Forest fans voice their view that youth is the best way forward, Reds legend Gary Mills has told Superstar Speakers how Brian Clough was a great example of how to nurture young players. Mills became Forest’s youngest ever first teamer when he made a shock debut in a First Division clash with Arsenal at the City Ground in November 1978 aged 16 years and 11 months. Since replaced at the top of the Reds’ all-time youngest list by Craig Westcarr, the now 59-year-old was also the youngest player to take part in a European Cup final when he started the club’s historic 1-0 triumph over Kevin Keegan’s Hamburg in Madrid barely 18 months later. Today Mills is the manager of Southern League Corby Town but still takes a keen interest in the fortunes of both Nottingham clubs, having also played for and managed Notts County. And he highlights 18-year-old Alex Mighton, who has continued his breakthrough break into Forest’s first team this term and 19-year-old Brennan Johnson, currently on loan at Lincoln City, as positive signs for Forest. Mighton is the fourth youngest Forest debutant and Johnson, 20th on the all-time list, featured last term under Sabri Lamouchi. “Brian Clough’s attitude was that if you’re good enough you’re old enough – and it worked wonders for us,” Mills said. “I made my City Ground debut in the same game when he brought in Garry Birtles after selling Peter Withe. “The gaffer believed in backing the young players and that helped give me my big chance. “But it’s important to say how much work went into making decisions like that possible. Brian Clough had me training with the first team from the age of 14, so when I got my first team chance I wasn’t overwhelmed.” Mills eventually left the City Ground in 1987 when Clough’s younger Reds side, which went on to win two League Cups, finish third in the First Division and be controversially beaten in the 1991 FA Cup final by Spurs was developing. Mills told Superstar Speakers : “Forest have brought young players such as Matty Cash, Joe Worrall and Ben Brereton through in recent seasons and it’s good to see Mighton and Johnson making an impact. I saw Brennan score a couple of goals in Lincoln’s 4-0 win at Northampton and was impressed." “Sometimes being young can be an advantage. I must admit that, being a teenager, I never quite took in the magnitude of what was happening when I played against Hamburg. “I think my family was more nervous than I was. Young players usually play without fear. “I’m sad to see my old club struggling at the wrong end of the Championship but they have a good manager in Chris Hughton, and he will be very aware of the young talent at the City Ground." “Whenever I see a player such as Mighten in a Forest shirt, it brings all my feelings flooding back of being the new lad in the side. “It would give me great pleasure if he and other young players can help improve Forest’s position this season – and point the way to a much brighter future.” Gary Mills is currently writing his autobiography featuring his amazing experience with Brian Clough. • Stuart Pearce. The Legend of Psycho

One of the true legends of Nottingham Forest and England Stuart Pearce is one of the most popular guests we have ever had at Superstar Speakers. Whether its exclusive signing sessions or his hilarious 'Evening with' events, Psycho always delivers. In this blog we have brought together a few of our favourite moments about the iconic life of Stuart Pearce The Famous 'Fixing the Iron' Story Every guest we have at our live events has one story that EVERYONE asks. This is Stuart Pearce's and with all great stories from Nottingham Forest legends, it involves Brian Clough. The story goes that on returning to the City Ground after one of his England call ups, Brian Clough decided to bring Pearce back down to earth, in his unique style. He walked into the dressing room with his usual ball and towel – but this time with an extra, mystery bag. ‘How do you think you played for England on Tuesday night son?’ He asked ‘I thought I did alright’ Replied Pearce ‘I didn’t’ he said ‘I thought you were shit son’ then went on to enquire why there was an advert for Stuart Pearce Electricians in the Forest Programme (As Pearce had been an electrician before turning professional and his brother still worked in the trade) Clough then proceeds to say ‘If my Barbara calls this number you won’t be coming, will you?’ ‘No’ replied Pearce ‘It will be my brother’ ‘Lads Our captain is a fraud’ Cloughie responded and then walks over to the mystery bag and pulls out an iron ‘Our Barbara’s iron is (broken) and if you don’t fix it, you’re not in the team Saturday’ To find out how the story ends visit our YouTube Channel to hear Forest legend and Pearce’s mate Mark Crossley tell us all about it (click the image for the video clip) 2. Penalty Shoot-out Redemption The moment that made Pearce a legend. No England fan of a certain age will ever forget this moment in history. A moment that personifies the personality, bravery and strength of character of Stuart Pearce. Arguably it is the second most iconic moment in the history of English football history after the World Cup win of 1966. The story begins inn the 1990 World Cup Semi Final against West Germany, it went down to a penalty shootout and Pearce being the fearless and patriotic man that he is, stepped up for the fourth penalty and it was saved by the West German Goalkeeper. This combined with Chris Waddle’s miss sent England out of the World Cup, a tournament that many thought they could win and the first semi final that the country had been in since 1966. 6 years later in Euro 1996 it was another penalty shootout, this time against Spain in the Quarter Finals and Pearce once again steps up. The nation held its breath, here was Stuart Pearce putting himself in the firing line in front of the whole country. A man who before the tournament wasn't even guaranteed to be picked for the squad and with the memories and emotions of Italia 90 still fresh in everyones mind, But Stuart Pearce being the man that he is, stepped up Even England Manager Terry Venables was surprised that Pearce wanted to take the penalty “We got to the end of extra-time, we all come together in the centre circle and I went over to Terry and I thought, ‘If I leave this to chance he’s not going to pick me to take a penalty because of my history.’ I just said to him, ‘I’ll take the third penalty.’ “He looked at me and went, ‘Are you fucking sure?!’ “I went, Yeah, I think I am. I was before you said that! Pearce placed the ball, and struck it with every fibre of his being. The nation watched as the ball powered its way into the back of the net and all of a sudden, 6 years of pain, anguish and disappointment left him as he screamed ‘come on’ at the top of his lungs and furiously punched the air, celebrating a moment with the rest of the nation – leading to one of Sports most iconic moments and iconic photographs Pearce’s philosophy was simple: “It would have been physically impossible for me not to take one of the kicks. Failure for me was not missing, it was standing on the half-way line watching someone else take the kick.” With that one moment, one act of bravery - English Football History was made 3. He was manager of the 2012 Olympic GB team and DIDN'T pick David Beckham After retiring from playing Pearce moved into the world of management, which seemed like a natural fit for the no-nonsense hard man. Pearce was the England Under 21 manager and had been since 2007 so he was perfect for the Team GB position. Expectation was high for a Great British Eleven, with London hosting the event this was the first time Team GB had a football team in the Olympics since 1960 after a the FA stopped recognition of the difference between professional and amateur footballers, and since the GB team was based around the England Amateur team, the FA stopped entering a football team into the Olympics The big talking point with Pearce’s team was the fact that David Beckham wasn’t included dispite Beckham’s work in bringing the Olympics to London and using his personal brand and status to generate interest, expectation said that Beckham would not only be in the team, but the captain. Pearce didn’t pick him. The team was allowed 3 ‘overage players’ and Pearce’s team choice was based on “Form and form alone” In normal circumstances the managers decision is final, but David Beckham brings another level of media awareness and exposure to any event so much so that Pearce was aware that converstaions were going on behind his back to try and include Beckham in the team. Speaking to Talksport he said “I think discussions were had, baring in mind adidas sponserd the games, the kit and they were also David’s sponser…I think conversations were also had between David’d agent and the FA about him having the captaincy – all these things were going on behind my back” It even got mentioned in Parliament! Despite all the talk, Beckham didn’t play in the team with Pearce's three 'overage' players being Ryan Giggs (as Captain), Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards. Britain only made it to the Quarter Finals 4. He once played Goalkeeper David James as a striker for Manchester City Having played under the master of psychology Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest, you would imagine that Stuart Pearce picked up a thing or two on the subject. However on the final day of the 2004/2005 season Pearce made a decision that even Cloughie didn’t dare try It was either an inspired or insane move but Pearce made the ‘tactical’ substitution with 15 minutes to go. He put David James up front, partnered with Robbie Fowler, in the hope of getting the goal they needed to secure European football. James even had an outfield shirt with number one printed on the back! Unfortunately the game ended in a draw, but in the defense of James at the start of the game even he didn’t know it was going to happen! GiveMeSport said “What followed was pure hilarity. The 6ft 4in goalkeeper couldn’t have looked more out of place. He was like a bull in a china shop. In one calamitous moment, he took out two opponents with a horrendously mistimed challenge after he had completely mishit a volley.” In retrospect Pearce said "I sat at home on Saturday night and thought to myself: 'What shall I do if we're drawing the game late on and need to hit it long?'" Pearce explained. "I've got a good striker in Jon Macken, who is really disappointed, but I wanted to unsettle them and in some ways it did. “It unsettled everyone . . . them and us." However you look at it, its one of the truly great and memorable moments in Premier League history 5. He is on the cover of an album and has appeared on punk rock shows on radio Its well known that Psycho is a huge fan of Punk Rock music. But its less common knowledge that he is actually featured on the cover of ‘The Lurkers’ Live album Gods Lonely Men, right in the middle of the mosh pit with the rest of the crowd. He has seen The Stranglers over 300 times, and in an attempt to live his rock star dreams he was allowed by the band to smash up their dressing room which he did with pure joy and scared the life out of Sean Dyche Pearce is such a life long fan of the genre he has even featured on BBC 6 music with Steve Lamacq, talking about his favourite songs and moments in Punk Culture 6. He is the Third oldest outfield player to play for England Not just that, but he is the 9th oldest player overall, with only Stanley Matthews and Les Compton (as outfield players) ahead of him. At the age of 37 years and 137 days Stuart Pearce represented his country in the Euro 2000 qualifiers. 8th September 1999 in a goalless draw against Poland Stuart Pearce made his last appearance for his country. • Nottingham Forest European Cup Winners 40th Anniversary Reunion

***Scroll to the bottom of the blog to see all the Legends*** Tickets Available Here It is one of the greatest achievements in the history of English Football. Nottingham Forest, under the guidance of the legendary Brian Clough, went from the second division promotion to first division champions in one year then carried that momentum on to win back to back European Cup winners, picking up two EFL cups along the way. Nottingham Forest started as underdogs, but with world class management from Clough and Peter Taylor, incredible team spirit and understanding of Cloughie's iconic 'rules of football' and the willingness to break the British Transfer Record and sign the right players for the right position - Nottingham Forest in this 5 year period transformed themselves as nobodies to kings of European Football and established themselves as one of Britain's 'Big Clubs' forever more This epic achievement is understandably the high point in the history of the football club, an achievement that will never be replicated, and hasn't been by a British club in the last 41 years. In fact since the back-to-back European Cup wins and 1981 European Cup campaign Nottingham Forest have failed to qualify for the competition leaving them an unbeatable record of having only ever played 20 games in the competition and have won 2 trophies! With a games to trophies ratio of 10 games per trophy - Nottingham Forest can claim that they have made footballing history Superstar Speakers are delighted to be hosting the Nottingham Forest European Cup 40th reunion where we will be bringing together AT LEAST 16 of the men who helped put Nottingham on the map and brought the biggest prize in European Football to The City Ground ***The Nottingham Forest Legends in alphabetical order*** Viv Anderson Nottingham Forest 1974 - 1984 Born in Clifton, Nottinghamshire Viv Anderson actually spent a year with Manchester United schoolboys before coming back to the East Midlands and Nottingham Forest. Anderson established himself as a first team regular under the guidance of Brian Clough and in his decade with the club played a vital part in the promotion, league win and both European Cup victories Viv Anderson is famous for being the first black footballer to represent England at international level, but he was also one of the first black footballers to represent English clubs in Europe and is regarded as a trailblazer in English and European football He was awarded an MBE in 2000 2. Colin Barrett Nottingham Forest 1976 - 1980 'Super' Colin Barrett is a fan favourite among the Nottingham Forest fans. A tough full back who unfortunately had his career cut short due to a knee injury. Barrett signed for Nottingham Forest from Manchester City - having dropped from the top flight into the second division. Barrett's greatest moment for Forest is scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in the first round of the 1979 European Cup campaign 3. Garry Birtles Nottingham Forest 1976 - 1980 / 1982 - 1987 Nottingham born Birtles played up front for his hometown club and earned a repuatation as a prolific goalscorer in both his spells at the City Ground. Birtles stepped up to make the strikers position his own after Peter Withe was sold to Newcastle, going on to score against Liverpool in the first round of the 1979 European Cup campaign, score 2 goals against Southampton helping Forest win the 1979 EFL Cup final. Garry Birtles was a first team regular during the iconic European Cup winning seasons of 1979 and 1980 where he picked up a winners medal for each victory - he is even responsible for the pass that John Robertson scored the winning goal in 1980 with. Birtles is one of the few footballers who returned to the club and managed to continue his level of football, scoring 15 goals in 1983 - 84 and 14 in 1986 - 87 making him joint top goalscorer that season 4. Ian Bowyer Nottingham Forest 1973 - 1981 / 1982 - 1987 'Bomber' Bowyer is a Nottingham Forest legend and another man who spent years at the club under the management of Brian Clough. Bowyer was a key part of Cloughie's midfield during the rise from second division to Two time champions of Europe. Bowyer left the club in 1981 for a spell at Sunderland only to return to Forest and make another 206 appearances for the club, leaving him with an overall total of 564 games and 96 goals and 10 trophies with Forest (Bowyer also has an FA Cup, EFL Cup and Cup Winners Cup from 1969 and 1970 with Manchester City) In 2002 Bowyer added to his Nottingham Forest legacy when he returned as a coach to help bring some of the incredible knowledge and passion he has for the club back to a new generation 5. Kenny Burns Nottingham Forest 1977 - 1981 If ever there was proof of the genius of Brian Clough - it is the career of Kenny Burns. Burns was a tough striker at Birmingham City and was named Birmingham City player of the year and played for his native Scotland 20 times up front Cloughie saw the big Scotsman and knew that he could fit perfectly into his Forest team as a centre back. Burns knew the role and adapted quickly to Nottingham Forest becoming player of the year in 1978 when Forest won the league, Captain of the EFL Cup winning team in the same year. Kenny Burns was present in both 1979 and 1980 Nottingham Forest European Cup wins, scored a goal against Barcelona in the 1979 European Super Cup win and was once again named Forest player of the year in 1981 A big man, with a big personality to match his huge reputation and legend in Nottingham 6. Frank Clark Nottingham Forest 1975 - 1979 / Manager 1993 - 1996 / Chairman 2011 The man that has done it all. Born and bred in the North East Frank Clark in Newcastle United's most decorated ever player after his role in the 1969 Fairs Cup victory. His career was deemed over by Newcastle bosses and was available on a free transfer to Nottingham Forest, in another shrewd move from Brian Clough he snapped up the experienced defender and made the most out of his European experience. Frank Clark helped Nottingham Forest win the 1978 First Division and 1979 European Cup before retiring Frank Clark returned to Forest as manager in 1993 and had the unenviable task of following the mighty Brian Clough. Never one to shirk at a challenge Clark turned Nottingham Forest into title contenders, finishing third in the Premier League and qualifying for Europe, He is also the man responsible for signing Stan Collymore and selling him for the (then) British transfer record of £8.5 Million In 2011 Clark took the reigns as chairman of the club and ambassador for Forest. Not bad for a man that Newcastle let go for free 7. Trevor Francis Nottingham Forest 1979 - 1981 The man who came to symbolize the level of confidence and ambition in Nottingham Forest. Trevor Francis was placed firmly in the history books when Brian Clough broke the British Transfer record to sign the Birmingham City wonder kid for a staggering £1 million - the first time a footballer had been sold for this amount. It is worth bearing in mind that the previous record was £516,000 taking David Mills from Middlesbrough to West Brom. Francis was priced at one million in the hope it would scare other clubs off - but Brian Clough wasn't scared of anything and knew he had to get Francis in his team In another masterstroke from Clough, Francis made his European Football debut in the final of the 1979 competition, in which he paid back every penny of that iconic transfer fee (which was £1 million, not £1 short as Brian Clough cheekily claimed) when he headed in the only goal of the game and won the European Cup for Nottingham Forest An iconic moment and an iconic photograph of 24 year old Francis diving towards goal that still stands at the City Ground to this day ***Click the image to check out our blog on the One in a Million Trevor Francis here *** 8. Archie Gemmill Nottingham Forest 1977 - 1979 Archie Gemmill is a beloved footballer to his nation. Simply because of his epic goal for Scotland vs Holland in 1978 Gemmill was one of a number of names taken from Derby County to Nottingham Forest following Clough and Taylor and immediately helped establish Clough and Taylor's style of football at the City Ground. Despite his importance to the Nottingham Forest team, Brian Clough dropped Archie Gemmill for the 1979 final and although he earned a medal he didn't get a minute of playing time in the match. Gemmill is still considered a Nottingham Forest legend and a vital part of the team that got Forest all the silverware in the late 1970s 9. Frank Gray Nottingham Forest 1979 - 1980 Frank Gray joined Nottingham Forest after the 1979 European Cup victory, but went on to appear in and win the 1980 Championship. Joining the club from Leeds United Frank Gray became the first player in history to appear in the European Cup final representing two different English Clubs, having been runner-up with Leeds in 1975 10. Brynn Gunn Nottingham Forest 1975 - 1986 Kettering born Bryn Gunn is a Nottingham Forest stalwart having spent over a decade at the City Ground. Gunn is most famous for his substitute appearance in the 1980 final (in which he picked up a winners medal) and Peter Taylor remarked to Brian Clough (on seeing 21 year old Gunn warming up) 'we're in the s*** now' As a defender coming on with just 6 minutes to go in a tense 1-0 European Cup final, this didn't fill Gunn with confidence - but this humorous quote as stuck to Gunn in the last 40 years and he has embraced his role in Nottingham Forest European Cup history 11. Larry Lloyd Nottingham Forest 1976 - 1981 Another shrewd buy for Brian Clough, bringing the experienced defender to Nottimgham. Larry Lloyd had won the firct division, FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Liverpool in 1973 and 1974 and had played for England. He brought his considerable skill and experience to the City Groubd and formed a solid defensive partnership with Kenny Burns at the heart of Forest's backline. Adding to his silverware collection Lloyd helped Nottingham Forest win a further 8 trophies (including the 2 European Trophies) Lloyd returned to Nottingham after his playing career as a radio pundit for Forest games One of the big personalities in the team 12. John McGovern Nottingham Forest 1974 - 1982 The Captain. Brian Clough's first signing for Forest and another Scottish legend that would prove a vital part of the team. McGovern lead the Forest team to all the success in the Clough era, an outstanding midfield general who incredibly never won an international cap for his home nation despite being a 2x European cup winner McGovern is still involved in Forest and regularly appears at the City Ground to watch the team and can often be heard on local radio offering his valuable opinion. Signed John McGovern Photograph - Available Here 13. Gary Mills Nottingham Forest 1978 - 1982 Gary Mills graduated from the Forest youth team into the first team during this golden era in Nottingham. In 1978 he made his first team debut and instantly broke the record as Nottingham Forest's youngest ever player at 16 years and 203 days, a record he held until Craig Westcarr made his debut in 2001. Brian Clough had a simple mantra regarding age 'If you are good enough, you are ready' Mills made one appearance in the 1979 European Cup campaign at the age of 17 years and 201 days making him the youngest player to win a European Cup, then he played in the 1980 final making him the youngest player to appear in a European Cup final at age 18. Gary Mills is one of the men that Brian Clough inspired to go into management and carry on the legacy of Old Big 'Ead, Gary Mills was born in Northamptonshire and has returned to his home county to manage non-league Corby Town Read our interview with Gary Mills on modern day Nottingham Forest's Youth https://www.superstarspeakers.co.uk/post/gary-mills-backs-fellow-forest-young-guns 14. Jimmy Montgomery Nottingham Forest 1979 - 1980 Veteran Goalkeeper Montgomery was the understudy to Forest's Number one Peter Shilton During the 1979 - 1980 season. Montgomery found success at Sunderland and Birmingham before spending his final playing year at the City Ground and picking up a European Cup Winners medal in 1980 15. David Needham Nottingham Forest 1977 - 1982 Central defender David Needham arrived at Nottingham Forest in 1977 just after the were promoted into the top flight of English football, and played a part in helping them go from newly promoted to league champions in the same year. Needham played for Nottingham Forest until 1982 when he moved to Toronto Blizzard. Needham was present for both European Cup victories despite sitting on the bench for both games. 16. John O'Hare Nottingham Forest 1975 - 1981 One of the men loyal to Brian Clough and another Scottish signing for Nottingham Forest. John O'Hare follwed Brian Clough from Derby to Leeds to Forest and brought continued success with him , winning 4 trophies with Derby County before helping establish Brian Clough's rules of football success to Nottingham Forest. O'Hare was vital in helping win 8 trophies at the club and is a 2 time European Champion 17. Martin O'Neill Nottingham Forest 1971 - 1981 / Manager 2019 Another man who followed Brian Clough into management is Northern Ireland legend Martin O'Neill. Winner of 8 trophies with in his Nottingham Forest playing career Martin O'Neill transitioned from player to manager with ease and had success with Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland before returning to Forest in 2019. O'Neill is a manager keeping the spirit and learnings of Brian Clough alive and a legend in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Glasgow and Leicester - but it all started for him with Brian Clough and Nottingham Forest 18. John Robertson Nottingham Forest 1970 - 1983 / 1985 - 1986 The Picasso of our game and the greatest player to ever play for Nottingham Forest. John Robertson is beloved by all the Nottingham Forest fans young and old, as new generations rediscover the 'little fat man' who was a football genius. It is no exaggeration to say that Robertson was vital in both European Cup finals having crossed the ball for Trevor Francis to head in the winner in 1979 and he scored the winner in 1980. John McGovern put it best when he said "John Robertson was like Ryan Giggs but with two good feet, not one. He had more ability than Ryan Giggs, his ratio of creating goals was better and overall he was the superior footballer", whilst Forest coach Jimmy Gordon rated Robertson as a better player than Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews, saying that he "had something extra on top". After retiring from active football Robertson paired with Martin O'Neill has his assistant at Norwich, Leicester, Celtic and Villa. One of British Footballs best ever players - who put himself in the hearts of Scottish Football fans for scoring the winning goal against England in 1981 19. Peter Shilton Nottingham Forest 1977 - 1982 There are many that belive Peter Shilton is England's best ever goalkeeper. Brian Clough understood the importance of a strong goalkeeper when he signed Shilton for £250,000 after Forest were promoted. In that League winning season Shilton only conceded 18 goals in 37 league games. ‘Some stupid people questioned me spending all that money on Peter Shilton. But I’ll tell you one thing – a team with only an OK goalkeeper is always looking over its shoulder.’ - Brian Clough Again the genius of Brian Clough shines through - noticing a world class goalkeeper and positioning him in the team added a layer of stability to Nottingham Forest that guided them to glory. He quickly established himself as a first team regular with his unique combination of skill, strength, passion and ability. John Barnes was a key factor in the rise of Watford FC from the old 2nd division to the top flight of English football and then finish runners up in the 1st division in 1983 and FA Cup finalists the year later in 1984. To this day John Barnes is still beloved and respected by the Watford fans and is a regular fixture on the ‘all-time XI’ for Watford. He made 296 appearances and scored 85 goals for the Hornets before signing for Liverpool John Barnes is most associated with Liverpool FC. Signed by Sir Kenny Dalglish in 1987 Barnes was part of a new generation of talent that was tasked with maintaining the success of the Merseyside club. Barnes established himself as one of the greatest players in England during his spell at Liverpool – an England Regular and first team player at one of the countries biggest clubs, Liverpool won the league in Barnes’s first season at Anfield, helped in part by his 15 goals from midfield. John Barnes earned his place in the hearts of the Liverpool fans after the Hillsborough disaster where he made the effort to visit injured fans in hospital and attend funerals of some of the victims – he even pulled out of an International friendly to make these commitments In his 10 years with Liverpool John Barnes made 403 appearances and scored 106 goals – He won the league twice, the FA Cup twice, League Cup once and the Charity Shield 3 times. Barnes’s time at Liverpool is best summed up by his team mate Peter Beardsley who said "The best player I ever played with, bar none. For three or four years at the end of the '80s, John was possibly the best player in the world." Check Out Former Liverpool Legend Dean Saunders on John Barnes John Barnes was handed his first England cap under Bobby Robson in 1983. He represented England until 1995 earning a total of 79 caps. Barnes’s finest moment for England (outside of the John Barnes rap world in motion) was his wonder goal against Brazil in 1984. Barnes proved his caliber as a player when he ran through the entire Brazil defence and scored what is considered one of England’s greatest goals Barnes’s England career didn’t quite match his club career – with the failure of Euro 88 and an injury in Italia 90 and another in Euro 92. John Barnes felt he didn’t get the same freedom with his country that he did at club level – stating that England’s systems were too rigid. Yet he continued to play and perform where he could for England – even returning to the side in the build up to Euro 96 John Barnes is a national hero – a man who has transformed from talented footballer to national hero (with his rap) and then into a media celebrity. He is a regular on TV notably appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, Who do you think you are and Celebrity Big Brother. Never one to mince his words John is an intelligent broadcaster and author who mixes his football knowledge and expertise as a pundit to offering his political opinion on question time Not bad for a man who started with Lucozade adverts and rapping with New Order. • There's Only One Ricky Hatton

Ahead of Ricky Hattons show in 2022 We celebrate the career of the Hitman and what made the British Public take him to their hearts Britain's Favourite Boxer “The fans only don't support me cos of the way I fight, they support me cos of the way I am.” Ricky Hatton is one of Britain’s best loved boxers, famous for bringing a lively and loud following where ever he boxed around the world. Its always a party when the Hitman is in town Superstar Speakers will be bringing Ricky The Hitman Hatton to Northampton Saints on 28th January 2022 for his one man ‘Evening with’ show. Ricky is still a beloved British Sportsman and his shows are unlike any others – he mixes tales of his incredible career with hilarious stand-up comedy and his natural Mancunian charm and wit. Ahead of Ricky Hatton Live in Northampton and Belfast – We celebrate the career of the Hitman and what made the British Public take him to their hearts What is Ricky Hatton’s Record? “I think my greatest achievement in boxing is my following.” The Hitman ended his 15-year career with a fight record of 48 Fights, 45 Wins, 32 Knock-outs and only 3 losses. Before turning professional Ricky was an accomplished amateur boxer having won SEVEN British titles at light-welterweight and represented the UK at the 1996 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships – where he was eliminated in the semi-finals despite 4 of 5 judges awarding the fight to him This led the 18-year-old Hatton to turn away from the amateurs and turn professional Ricky Hatton won his first fight by TKO in the first round against Colin McAuley and the boxing world took notice – his second fight was at the prestigious Madison Square Garden on the undercard for Naseem Hamed vs Kevin Kelley, in which Ricky won again He spent the next few years building a reputation and was named 1999 Young Fighter of the Year by the British Boxing Writers Club and capped off the decade by defeating Dillon Carew for the WBO Intercontinental Light-Welterweight title. This would be the first of many titles Ricky won in his career – including the WBU light-welterweight title, IBF light-welterweight title, The Ring light-welterweight title, WBA welterweight title, IBO light-welterweight title and WBC international light-welterweight title It was really the 39th fight in his career against Kosta Tszyu that the world took notice – Hatton went in as a huge underdog, with Tszyu considered one of the greatest pound for pound active fighters with one of the hardest punches. The fight took place in Manchester’s MEN arena, giving Ricky the home field advantage and support from the Manchester fans. Hatton took Tszyu to the final round before Knocking his opponent out. It is considered one of the greatest fights from a British Boxer in 20 years. Ricky Hatton had arrived Hatton was undefeated in his first 43 fights with 31 knockouts – it was these credentials and reputation that earned him his fight against Floyd Mayweather Floyd Mayweather Vs Ricky Hatton “If there was such a thing as re-incarnation, Floyd would come back as himself” Ricky’s 44th career fight would be his biggest and most famous. When he answered the challenge of the number 1 Boxer in the world Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Both men were undefeated and champions – Ricky was holding The Ring Light-Welterweight championship and Mayweather the WBC and The Ring Welterweight Championships – which were on the line in this fight The fight was staged in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on 8th December 2007 and drew 920,000 on HBO and 1,150,000 on Sky Box Office Ricky’s fans flooded to Las Vegas and created a wall of noise and vocal support for the home town hero singing God Save the Queen (along with Tom Jones), Blue Moon as Ricky walked to the ring and a near constant chant of ‘there’s only one Ricky Hatton’ and 'Hatton Wonderland.' This level of support helped motivate Hatton to bring the fight to Mayweather, even catching Mayweather with a left jab that rocked the American and gave Ricky an advantage that he continued to press until Mayweather landed a right that cut Ricky above the eye. In round six Hatton was docked a point for allegedly hitting Maywether in the back of the head, this was later revealed to have hit the ring rope rather than Mayweather, but the decision caused Ricky to lose concentration and ended with Mayweather adapting to Ricky’s fighting style and capitalising on his loss of focus, ending up knocking Hatton down in the 10th round and despite Hatton getting back to his feet and continuing the fight, His corner threw the towel in and Hatton suffered his first career loss The official scores ended 88 - 82, 89 - 81, 89 – 81 all to Mayweather Who did Ricky Hatton Lose to? Ricky only lost two more fights in his professional career to Manny Pacquiao in 2009 and to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 Man of the People – the Ricky Hatton Sense of humour “I'm a Mancunian born and bred and I feel I'm no different to the man in the crowd and it's nice to reward them. I want to become a great champion.” Ricky Hatton is a proud working-class hero. Famed for his self-deprecating wit and sense of humour. This, combined with his fighting style endeared him to the British Public Hatton famously struggled with his weight between fights, Ricky would regularly gain 35-40lb between matches and would have to cut and train heavily before each next fight. This earned him the nickname ‘Ricky Fatton’ Its true Hatton style he took this nickname on the chin and embraced it by wearing a custom Ricky Fatton fat suit in press picture, when asked about his weight he simply replied They call me Ricky Fatton. Mind you I’ve had a lot on my plate recently. I got measured for this suit the other week. They measured my pants, jacket, top to bottom. Bloody hell Ricky you’re a Mark F they said, a size up from a marquee And “I've got a problem with my legs; they just can't walk past a chippy.” This level of humour and fun is evident in Ricky’s life and stand-up show as he always entertains with a series of jokes and anecdotes that leave the crowds in stitches every time! He even appeared on WWE RAW once and ended up fighting with Chavo Guerrero Ricky tells a funny story of how Floyd Mayweather tried to throw his weight around in the build up to their fight in 2007 “And I remember me, Kerry Kayes, Billy Graham, my dad, and Paul Speak were all sat in this restaurant and Floyd came in with a load of cameras as we were sat down having a meal…And he was going ‘Hey Ricky, how are you doing?’ and he was flicking $100 bills all over this table and all the press were lapping it up and taking pictures…I went ‘Oh that’s very kind of you Floyd’ and I picked up all these hundred dollar bills and said ‘How much was the bill mate..They said $300 and I went ‘cheers d******’ and put about $800 in my top pocket! And all the press took pictures laughing their heads off and Floyd did not like it..So for all his mouth he will never get one over on me the d******.” Because Ricky was so beloved by the public, when he opened up about his private battle with depression, there was nothing but support for the champion. Ricky opening up about the disease helped pave the way for men to admit they suffered too and that it wasn’t a sign of weakness Training the Future and the legacy of Ricky Hatton Since retirement Ricky Hatton is still involved in Boxing, this time as a trainer. Notabably training Zhanat Zhakiyanov, Paul Upton and Tommy Fury. Hatton’s Son Campbell has followed in his fathers footsteps and recently turned pro “I’m extremely proud of Campbell turning professional,” said British fight legend Hatton. “I’ve been proud of him since the day he was born. He’s a fine young man and he’s following in my footsteps. My mum and dad brought me up in a certain way and I’d like to think I’m doing the same thing with Campbell. “He now has a massive platform with Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports. I don’t think he’s going to disappoint. He’s only young and he’s got a way to go. I think people will love his personality, he’s a chip off the old block. Fans will love his fighting style. “I think people will take him to their hearts like they did with me. He’s got a great team behind him with Matchroom and Eddie, he’s got me and Matthew looking after him in the gym. He’s got a heart as big as his dad’s. He has the talent and the ability to be a real force and success story in the game.” ***For all our Boxing News, Events and Memorabilia - Click this image*** Don't forget to keep up with our latest news and offers by subscribing to our mailing list at the bottom of the page Get social by following us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

  • The Magnificence of Brian Clough

“telling the entire world and his dog how good a manager I was. I knew I was the best but I should have said nowt and kept the pressure off 'cos they'd have worked it out for themselves.” Brian Clough. There was only one Brian Clough. A truly magnificent man who carved a legacy and a niche in English football and made history as he marched forwards with Nottingham Forest. Cloughie spent nearly 20 years at the City Ground – managing the club from 1975 through to 1993. Seeing the club go from unfashionable ‘no-hopers’ in the second division to back-to-back winners of the greatest prize in European Club football. Not bad for a man who was told ‘You’ll never win anything here’ by former manager Dave MacKay. Brian Clough was a man who knew where he was going and defied expectation – and he took Nottingham Forest from 13th in the second division to promotion to winning the first division to winning the European Cup in 1979 and then again in 1980. He is responsible for the first ever £1 million pound transfer in British football history (doubling the existing record) Nottingham Forest never made it to Europe again and have the unusual stat of having 2 European Cups for every 10 games they played in the competition. A record that will never be beaten as teams now have to play more than 10 games in each competition He even continued to manage Forest into the Premier League. Clough saw it all, lived it all and still is iconic in the city of Nottingham – not every football manager gets a statue, but Cloughie’s likeness stands tall in the heart of Nottingham, and for good reason. He was a complete one off and was always meant to be immortalized 1. Brian Clough Quotes Never one to shy away from speaking his mind (both on and off camera) the wit and wisdom of Brian Clough lives on with his enigmatic quotes. Every single thing he said is laced with charm, wit and arrogance. Cloughie knew he was special and he wasn’t afraid to tell people This is our collection of our favourite Brian Clough Quotes “Good managers make good sides. There’s no such thing as a side making a manager” – on lucky players. “We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right” – on listening to players' opinions. "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one" “The River Trent is lovely; I know because I have walked on it for 18 years” “Beckham? His wife can’t sing and his barber can’t cut hair.” –on a new breed of player "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" – on being compared to Sir Alex Ferguson "My wife said to me in bed, 'God, your feet are cold.' I said, 'You can call me Brian in bed, dear.'" – Being Charming There are countless examples of Brian Clough Quotes – every time he went on TV or to the press, magic happened, Brian Clough said what he meant, meant what he said and did it with a smile on his face Its incredible to think just how he would have managed in the world of social media – because Brian Clough on Twitter would be a thing to behold! 2. Goals as a player There is more to Brian Clough than the manager of Nottingham Forest. As a young man he played professional football and in typical Cloughie style, he made history doing it. Brian Clough was born in Middlesbrough in 1935 and when he was 20 years old (after national service) he played for his home town club as a striker. Brian Clough played 222 games for Boro and scored 204 goals, a goal in every 1.08 games. To this day he is still the 41st highest goal scorer in football league history. This included scoring over 40 goals a season for 4 seasons running. Brian Clough being the man he was, was getting frustrated with scoring countless goals but his team to winning due to defensive problems and started to fall out with the rest of the squad, accusing them of betting against the team. He even once asked the team how many he needed to score for the team to win after a 6-6 draw at Charlton. In 1961 Clough was sold to Sunderland and scored 63 goals in 74 matches, 1 goal in 1.17 games including 24 goals by December. Brian Clough is best remembered as a manager, especially after his success with Nottingham Forest, but credit does need to be given to his incredible career and goalscoring record in the North East. His overall goal ratio is 1 goal in 0.916 3. The Miracle Men Brian Clough is, and always will be, synonymous with Nottingham Forest. It is Brian Clough that made Nottingham Forest into what they are and what they became. It’s no exaggeration to say that Brian Clough turned Forest into one of the ‘big teams’ in the country, and for a brief time Europe. The transformation at Nottingham Forest was nothing short of a miracle – hence the reason that even now over 40 years later the team are known as the miracle men. Cloughie took an unfashionable team, with out of favour players and made them the best in Europe. He started building the squad as soon as he arrived in 1975, raiding his old teams Leeds and Derby for the players he wanted, believed in and could play ‘his’ way. Signing up future legends such as John McGovern and John O’Hare, refreshed the careers of John Robertson, Martin O’Neill and Viv Anderson. Brought in the experience of Frank Clark on a free transfer from Newcastle, transformed Tony Woodcock from a forgotten midfielder to an England capped striker and signed Kenny Burns from Birmingham and changed him from a tough striker to a tough centre back turning Kenny into a semi-regular Forest Captain and FWA player of the year in 1978. This was the magic of Brian Clough – he knew what he wanted to see on the football pitch, knew which players he needed to achieve it and then managed the men to perform to his expectations. Brian Clough was a footballing genius. It was this mentality and drive that pushed Forest to the heights of Europe. It’s the greatest story in English football history and it will never be repeated. Clough took Forest from 13th in the second division with zero expectation. He started building in 1975 and by 1977 he had won promotion to the first division; He then won the double of the League and League cup in 1978 ensuring he qualified for European competition. Outside of the famous 1979 and 1980 European Cup victories – Forest under Clough won the League cup a further 3 times, full members cup twice, the Charity shield, European Super Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup. Brian Clough will also be remembered for being the manager that broke the British Transfer record and made Trevor Francis the first ever Million Pound Footballer. Despite this incredible statement of intent Clough kept Francis away from European Competition until the final! With the million-pound man chomping at the bit to prove his value and position in the team he scored the winning goal that won Forest the 1979 European Cup – it was Francis’s first ever European game and he won the medal and scored the winning goal. It was another genius move from Old big Head 4. Gary Mills Managing Nottingham Forest was more that just the big marquee signings and the glory. Brian Clough controlled every aspect of the football club. He was Nottingham Forest and Nottingham Forest was him. (There are very strong rumours that this level of control is what prevented him being named England Manager) Brian Clough made sure he knew everything that was happening at the club and in particular the young players coming through – to maintain the success of the football club. One such young talent was Gary Mills. Gary Mills was 17 years and 201 days old when he won his first European Cup medal – the youngest to ever achieve this accolade and a record that still stands to this day! Again, Brian Clough knew that this young man would have the will and desire to succeed in a team of established players and claimed that ‘if you are good enough, you are old enough’ Millsy build a career on this reputation and took Cloughies style and winning mentality to further his career, by becoming a Leicester City Legend who captained them to promotion and an established manager in the lower leagues Check out our blog on Gary Mills here *** Click the image *** 5. The legends of Brian Clough Not many men leave a legacy like Brian Clough. His reputation and successes are incredible, but the behind-the-scenes stories are where the real magic lies. There are many, many stories about Brian Clough that get told and whilst many are unbelievable and outlandish – in the case of Brian Clough, you never know where the truth lies! We spoke to 3 former players who crossed paths with the iconic manager – and the tales they told were all equally magnificent! Mark Crossley on how Brian Clough Dealt with David Currie Dean Saunders on Brian Clough trying to sign him Glyn Hodges on Brian Clough meeting the Crazy Gang Despite all the pomp and circumstance, Brian Clough did have a humble side – he was a man of the people and appreciated his good fortune – his words on how he would like to be remembered are a world away from the bombastic persona However, what does remain, is the fact that Brian Clough will always be remembered “I want no epitaphs of profound history and all that type of thing. I contributed - I would hope they would say that, and I would hope somebody liked me,” On how he would like to be remembered.” Don't forget to keep up with our latest news and offers by subscribing to our mailing list at the top of the page Get social by following us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook
