But actually ... I am an Aston Villa fan so my heroes as a kid were Gary Shaw and Tony Morley from the 1980/1981 European Cup Winning Team" (Note: Villa won the cup in 1982) 2. What do you think to the current Manchester United team "... Defiantly going through a transitional period, but they are showing signs of brilliance in certain games" 3. What did it mean to wear the Man Utd number 7 shirt? "During the 1990/1991 season I was fortunate enough to wear the number 7 shirt, and I have to say it was by default! I actually scored goals in it, I played well in it. But the manager wouldn't give it to me, he gave me number 5... but i actually fell in love with number 5" 4. What is the proudest moment of your career? " Its difficult to pick one really... signing for Man Utd...making my England debut at 19... winning the first Premier League win Man Utd...scoring a hat trick at Highbury, winning the Cup Winners Cup in Rotterdam against Barcelona...PFA Young Player of the Year (1991). But if I had to pick a special moment I would probably say the backheel I scored against Barcelona at Old Trafford 5. What was better the Sharpie Shuffle or the Elvis Celebration? 22nd January 2021 - Stan Collymore celebrated his 50th birthday and looked back on his career. In those 50 years Stan the man filled his days with success, controversy, highs and lows (even an appearance in the movie Basic Instinct 2). Acknowledged as the best player from the class of 92 his career was cut short by a horrific injury that robbed Man United and England of a brilliant talent. Growing up at Manchester United and the Cliff, Ben remembers the impact Bryan Robson had on his young career ‘He was the one that got me interested in football’ said Ben ‘He would just roll his sleeves up and was almost a one-man team…It was a privilege to play in the same team as him’ In Ben’s first week at Manchester United he bumped into his ‘Absolute hero’ Bryan Robson and ended up breaking in a brand-new pair of boots for him – being a respectful young player he returned them to the Captain, polished and in great condition only for Robbo to ask the young man’s opinion on the boots. Ben told Bryan that he liked them and being the Captain of the club and appreciating that the club was more than just the first team, Robson let Ben keep the boots – Which Thornley still keeps as one of his prized possessions Everyone of us looked up to Bryan Robson – Keith Gillespie Another player who started his early playing days at the Cliff with the Manchester United Youth team is Keith Gillespie, who again spoke of nothing but respect and admiration for the iconic captain. ‘Certainly, for myself growing up as a Man Utd fan he was my hero’ said Keith. Gillespie told us about the times when Robson was coming back from injury and would play alongside the youth team ‘If somebody should have left one on you, from the other team – he would always be there to give them one back!’ Everyone has heard the stories of, or been lucky enough to have seen, Bryan Robson not allowing his teammates to take any abuse from the opposition and the fact he was always first in line to defend them on the pitch for the first team – but it is telling the mark of the man that this attitude continued for every Manchester United player – regardless of whether they were first team or youth team The best leader anybody could ever play under – Lee Martin Lee Martin is a Manchester United legend, the man who scored the winning goal in the 1991 FA Cup final replay and helped secure Sir Alex Ferguson’s first trophy with Man United, He is another product of the youth system and played first team football under Bryan Robson ‘I Remember going away with England a few times, we were with the Under 21s, but we traveled with the first team…I Remember Tony Adams coming down the plane and saying all the lads ‘We are all going to put 100 pounds in for the air Stewardesses, we were only on about 25 quid a week, 100 pounds for us to put in would have been ridiculous, any way Bryan came out and said ‘don’t worry lads, I’ve sorted all your money out with Tony, so that’s all sorted…that would of bankrupted me for a month!’ Its stories like this, from the men who played and worked with Robson that prove what a great captain he was for both club and country He was the best player in training, the best player on the pitch – Andy Campbell A huge part of the legacy of Bryan Robson is his time as player-manager of Middlesbrough. It was a time when Boro started bringing in World Class legends to Riverside and delighted the Premier League and the Boro fans with his star-studded line up. FORMER Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley has told Superstar Speakers of the amazing psychology of legendary manager Brian Clough. Crossley, who made more than 300 appearances between the sticks for The Reds between 1989 and 2000, revealed how Cloughie eased his nerves before his First Division debut – and helped keep his feet firmly on the ground a few weeks later. Crossley was a 19-year-old rookie when Forest suffered a goalkeeping crisis before an important City Ground clash with mighty Liverpool. Regular guardian Steve Sutton was struck by a virus, Hans Segers was on loan at Wimbledon and the two other goalkeepers were injured but Crossley was almost the last to know he was playing that night. “I found out when he called me out of the boot room at 7pm, just 45 minutes before kick off,” said Crossley. “He told me ‘bring you boots, and it would help if you brought your gloves with you as well – you’re playing". “He probably thought I’d shit myself if I knew I was facing up to Kenny Dalglish, Peter Beardsley and John Barnes.” Forest triumphed 2-1 that night with Crossley, with a little help from the ever-unpredictable manager, going home with the match ball signed by both sets of players. But just when he thought he’d cracked it after keeping goal in three successive wins, Crossley was brought back down to earth by Clough in his own unique style. “I was just about to go home on the Saturday night when Clough told me to report to his house the following morning...When I got there, he told me “thank you for agreeing to play for Simon’s team today. They haven’t got a goalie – and you’ll do!” Crossley then played for Derby Sunday League Division Five side run by Clough’s son Simon, with the team subsequently being fined £50 for playing a ringer. “Cloughie took it out of my wages,” adds Crossley who describes the late former Forest manager as a ‘master of psychology’. Clayton Blackmore To some he is Mr Dependable, to some he is Sunbed. The name Clayton Blackmore should be known to all Manchester United fans. A vital part of the early days of Sir Alex Ferguson, Blackmore is the only man in Man United history to have played in every outfield number and position for the club. One of the most under appreciated players in the history of Manchester United, Blackmore was a key player for Man Utd between 1982 and 1994 before following Bryan Robson to Middlesbrough. Steve Bruce Before he was a stalwart manager in the Premier League - Steve Bruce was one of the finest defenders in English football. A 3x winner of the Premier League, 3x FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners Cup. Bruce was also the joint highest league goal scorer with Brian McClair in the 90/91 season with 13 goals, and an incredible 19 goals in all competitions in that year Despite that he never won an England Cap 4. Mike Phelan Manchester United through and through. Phelan played for the club between 1989 and 1994 then returned to the club to manage the reserves in the early 2000s before stepping into the coaching staff as first team coach and becoming Sir Alex's assistant manager from 2008 to Fergie's retirement in 2013. Phelan is currently assistant manager to Ole Gunnar Solksjaer 5. Gary Pallister The other half of Manchester United's centre of defence with Steve Bruce. Gary Pallister was at one time the most expensive defender in Britain when Sir Alex brought him to Old Trafford to build the backbone of his team, costing a massive £2.3 Million in 1989 Pally spent 9 years with Manchester United and won a winners medal in every single one of Sir Alex's achievements until he returned to his beloved Middlesbrough in 1998 Winning 4 Premier League Titles, 3 FA Cups, the EFL Cup, 4 Charity Shields, the European Super Cup and the 1991 Cup Winners Cup Pallister made 22 appearances for England between 1988 and 1996 6. Brian McClair The first man to score 20 goals in a season for Manchester United since George Best. Choccy is one of the most popular strikers in Manchester United history. Mark Hughes The very definition of a big game player. Mark Hughes scored both goals in the 1991 Cup Winners Cup Final and wrote his name into Manchester United history. Mal Donaghy Manchester United has always had a strong connection with Northern Ireland. The boys dug deep – the Championship is a hard league and the teams there are used to high competition, the pressure of play-offs and how a loss of a couple of points means a slide down the league. The team spirit started and Leicester battled their way out of trouble. A man who represents the team, motivates them, congratulates them and drives them towards glory. Wes Morgan was a stalwart throughout the 2016 Season – leading his team to glory from the heart of the defence, continuing to push Leicester City forward to the dazzling heights of the Premier League, coming up against the world class ‘big teams’ of England and the greatest players in the world. Which is all the more impressive when up until 2 years before he had been solely playing the championship. Wes Morgan as Captain never let the belief die, always took care of the team, respected the club and the fans and never took the limelight from the rest of the squad. Claudio Ranieri said about him ”He is a big gentle bear who looks after all the lads. He does not speak so much but when he does speak, everybody listens. He is the perfect captain. I never knew anything about him before I came here. One of the finest wingers to have ever played in English Football, Gray played with grace and skill that lead him to success in the glory days of Don Revie's Leeds team winning the League in 1969 and 1974, the Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971, the FA Cup in 1972, Charity Shield in 1969 and EFL Cup in 1968 Voted the 3rd greatest ever Leeds player of all time Eddie Gray is best remembered for his 2 sublime goals against Burnley, where he demonstrated his superior footballing brain and ability, beating for men to score what is considered the Greatest Leeds Goal of all time 2. Frank Gray Leeds United 1972 - 1979, 1981 - 1985 Younger Brother of Eddie Gray, Frank carved out a career and reputation as a Leeds Utd legend from under the shadow of his older brother. Gray was part of the Leeds team that were runners up in both the FA Cup and Cup Winners Cup in 1973 as well as the European Cup in 1975 as part of Don Revie's attempts to rebuild another great squad with the Whites. He did win the 1974 First Division After a couple of years with Nottingham Forest Frank Gray returned to Leeds United under the management of another Leeds Legend Allan Clarke. He stayed with the club until 1985 when his older brother Eddie (now manager) sold him to Sunderland 3. John Lukic Leeds United 1978 - 1983, 1990 - 1996 Iconic Leeds Utd Goalkeeper John Lukic made 330 appearances for the club and is considered one of the finest goalies to have played for Leeds. Lukic's finest season for Leeds was the 1991/1992 title winning season when he kept an impressive 20 clean sheets after stepping into the number 1 jersey after the career of Nigel Martyn. Lukic is one of only 4 men to have played top flight football in 4 separate decades having started in 1978 and ending his career with Arsenal in 2001. Duncan McKenzie was one of Brian Clough's signing when he (briefly) managed Leeds Utd. McKenzie entertained the media and the fans with his unique abilities and party tricks that included jumping over a Mini Cooper and being able to throw a golf ball the length of a football pitch. McKenzie lasted longer at Leeds than the man who signed him spending two years with the club and establishing himself as a strike partner with the iconic Allan Clarke scoring 16 goals in 39 games. We reunite three of the legends of England's World Cup Campaign in which they came within touching distance of winning the World Cup for the second time Tickets Available Here - CLICK THE IMAGE FOR TICKETS The Downfall of English Football It cannot be underestimated the importance of the 1990 World Cup and how the men who represented England transformed the reputation of English football at home and abroad, laying the foundations for the rise in popularity of football, the boost of Euro 96, the Premier League and the birth of 'its coming home' Before Italia 90 English football was in a dark place. Violence was rife on the terraces and football had become a no go area for families. The public loved football, but the live experience was being taken away from them due to the risk of hooliganism. This came to a head for English football with the Heysel disaster - a European game in 1985 between Liverpool and Juventus that resulted in the deaths of 39 fans and injured a further 600. This was the breaking point for UEFA and caused English football to be banned from European Competition indefinitely . The Heysel Disaster has been called 'the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions' As the 1980s gave way to the 1990s - football was changing in England. Attitudes were changing and the generation that had been responsible for the hooliganism were making way for a new generation of English football fan. On the pitch the same was happening, a new generation of footballers were making their mark in the league and desperate for European Competition. The England Team and changing attitudes Sir Bobby Robson was the man in charge of taking England to the World Cup in Italy. He had been in charge of the national team since replacing Ron Greenwood in 1982 after failing to qualify for Euro 84 he led England to World Cup 86 (going out in the Quarter Finals to Argentina with the Hand Of God incident) and Euro 88 (where England got knocked out in the Group stages) Italia 90 would be Sir Bobby's last tournament in charge as the press and fans were ready for a change in direction for the England Team The England team found success at the perfect time - They qualified for the World Cup without conceding a single goal - uniting the nation who were ready for a positive attitude towards the sport. Football has always had the ability to united the nation and the 1990 team were doing just that, playing great football and proving to the world that England belonged back in on the world stage of football. Sir Bobby had put together a team that had a mix of experience and new talent - combining the steel of veterans such as Shilton, Butcher, Lineker, Waddle and Robson with new and exciting talent such as Gascoigne, Walker, Barnes, Pearce and Platt. England were magnificent in the World Cup with Sir Bobby Robson guiding the team, learning from his experiences in previous tournaments and encouraging the passion and will to win in his team, which fed the nation. For the first time in years the entire nation was behind the England team and loving football.
